Nadja Brečević - The Volcano (SHE)

In my work I seek to address the concept of Anthropomorphism. That is, to attribute personifications of human-nature onto non-human things. What I find most interesting is how we project our own feelings onto nature, as well as on different weather conditions. When it is sunny, the weather is happy, but when it rains, it is sad. When the sea lays still, it is calm. When a volcano erupts, we say it is angry.

In my film I have given life to a volcano. The world was quiet before she was born, but then her heart starts beating in time with her rumbling voice. She is attached to the earth and is affected by its course, yet she remains. The earth spins – she exists. But over time, the sound of her voice is lowered. Nothing lasts forever. We exist, but then we disappear, while the earth keeps rotating around its own axis.

The pictures and sounds are recorded at Sillvik, a nature reserve at northern Hisingen, Gothenburg. Most of the sounds are recorded with a hydrophone and a contact microphone. Sillvik is a place that I have visited several times for expedition-like purposes. During my visits, I have tried to act as if the volcano was really there. My senses have registered what is there, but in my imagination the landscape has transformed into something else. A dance between reality and fiction.
